Community Capacity Building

Community capacity building in the realm of tobacco and vaping faces significant challenges due to the fragmented nature of service provision among various organizations in Manitoba.

With regional health authorities, government agencies, non-profits, and charities each operating independently, resources and efforts are often duplicated, leading to inefficiencies and missed opportunities for collaboration. This siloed approach not only hinders the effective sharing of research, initiatives, and resources but also limits the collective impact of these entities in addressing tobacco and vaping-related issues.

Manitoba needs a tobacco reduction public health coalition.

There's a pressing need to streamline efforts and foster collaboration among stakeholders. Establishing a centralized coalition can help organizations pool resources, share best practices, and coordinate initiatives for maximum impact.

A collaborative approach would facilitate the efficient dissemination of research findings, evidence-based interventions, and educational materials, ensuring that all stakeholders have access to the latest information and tools.

Implementing standardized programming and initiatives based on gold standard practices can help ensure consistency and effectiveness across the board, ultimately leading to improved outcomes in tobacco and vaping reduction efforts in Manitoba.

What we’re doing

Building a strategic framework

Over the last two years we have been working with our Alliance partners, the Provincial Government, Regional Health Authorities, and other community health workers and organizations to develop a strategic framework for the reduction of tobacco, vaping and nicotine-related products.

Community practicum placement

We continue to engage with the faculties of Pharmacy and Nursing at the University of Manitoba by providing community practicum placement opportunities for students. This “Future Leaders” approach offers an understanding of the impact of commercial tobacco and nicotine products on our society. Our goal is to develop deeper community capacity and champions by informing the future practice of these healthcare professionals.
