Quitting Smoking & Vaping

Despite extensive efforts to curb tobacco and vaping use in Manitoba, 14% of Manitobans still smoke.

And the consequences faced by long-term smokers remain dire.

Each year, 1,525 Manitobans lose their lives to tobacco-related diseases, while 30,500 individuals suffer from adverse health outcomes.

Adding to the complexity of the issue is the rise of vaping among young people. Shockingly, 1 in 10 Canadian youth aged 15-19 are now part of the vaping statistic, representing a concerning trend that demands immediate attention.

Support for quitting

Thankfully, Manitobans seeking to quit smoking and vaping have access to a variety of programs dedicated to supporting cessation efforts.

From the Manitoba Lung Association to the Smokers’ Helpline, Pharmacists Manitoba, and CancerCare, numerous resources are available to provide guidance, support, and assistance throughout the quitting process. These organizations offer a range of services, including counselling, nicotine replacement therapy, and educational resources, tailored to meet the diverse needs of individuals seeking to break free from tobacco and vaping addiction.

A need to increase access to nicotine cessation medications and services

While existing programs and organizations play a crucial role in supporting cessation efforts, there remains a pressing need for increased funding and coordination to enhance the effectiveness of these services.

With thousands of Manitobans still struggling with tobacco and vaping addiction, resources must be allocated strategically to reach those most in need. Furthermore, improved coordination among various stakeholders and organizations can ensure that cessation services are delivered efficiently and comprehensively, maximizing their impact in helping Manitobans quit smoking and vaping for good.

By investing in cessation programs and fostering collaboration among stakeholders, we can make significant strides towards creating a healthier, tobacco and vape-free Manitoba for all.

What we’re doing

We’re actively supporting and promoting cessation initiatives as they emerge.

Policy recommendation

We’re urging the government to implement a compulsory cost recovery mechanism on tobacco manufacturers. This measure would ensure full funding for Manitoba's commercial tobacco and youth vaping prevention and reduction efforts. Read the full recommendation here.
