The Tobacco Settlement Claims Deadline Is One Year Away

September 3, 2027 is the final deadline to submit a claim under the national tobacco settlement's Pan-Canadian Claimants' Compensation Plan (PCC Plan), one year from today.
In March 2025, the Ontario Superior Court approved a settlement resolving long-running litigation against Canada's tobacco industry. The total settlement is $32.5 billion, most of which goes to provinces and territories to recover tobacco-related health care costs.
A separate portion of the settlement funds the PCC Plan, which compensates eligible individual claimants outside Quebec.
Who may be eligible
The PCC Plan allows certain people who smoked and were later diagnosed with a serious tobacco-related illness to seek compensation.
Not everyone who smoked qualifies. Specific eligibility criteria apply, including requirements around smoking history and diagnosis timelines, and these are best reviewed directly on the official claims website.
Family members may also be able to submit a claim on behalf of a deceased loved one who passed from a tobacco-related illness, provided that person met the plan's eligibility requirements.
The PCC Plan covers residents outside Quebec. A separate plan, the Quebec Class Action Administration Plan (QCAP), applied to Quebec residents. That claims deadline passed on August 31, 2026.
